The discussion of Manville et al. highlights several interesting points about interpreting observations of the 1995 Whangaehu lahars at Ruapehu. We would like to add to some of these points, and to clarify some of the issues raised by the Discussion.

Whereas the three lahars we described were part of a long sequence of events, during the periods of our direct observation they were simple, single-waveform events.
