We welcome the opportunity to discuss the points raised by Thomas and Mack (1995) regarding our pedologic, sedimentologic, and stratigraphic conclusions presented in Driese et al. (1994). We completely agree that our conclusions are critical to the interpretation of regional tectonic history of the Ouachita and Appalachian orogenic belts and the orogenic foreland. Thomas and Mack (1995) have raised several questions concerning (1) the interpretation of a regional unconformity at the top of the Monteagle Limestone, (2) the stratigraphic significance of this unconformity, (3) the sedimentologic and facies interpretation of the Hartselle Sandstone of northcentral Alabama, and (4) the provenance interpretation of framework grain compositions from the Hartselle Sandstone from north-central Alabama.
