A method applicable to weak, low-melting-point model materials permits observation through a petrographic microscope of large simple shearing deformation of samples as thin as ordinary thin sections. Examples of ductile, brittle, and intermediate behavior can be studied. The method lends itself to teaching and may also prove valuable in research.
