Abstract

New aeromagnetic data from Jordan provide information about basement structures that were previously unknown. Large east-west magnetic anomalies are truncated by the Dead Sea Rift. Comparison of these data with aeromagnetic data from west of the rift strongly suggests that these anomalies have undergone slightly more than 100 km of left-lateral offset. This is the same amount of offset concluded from several studies of surface bedrock geology. Offset of magnetic anomalies provides confirmation of the total amount of offset but no sense of timing or the polyphase history of motion suggested by other studies.
