Morphological and magnetic data indicate that the hypothesis that the Walvis Ridge is a hot-spot–tracing volcanic ridge is not satisfactory. Other geologic and geophysical observations are ambiguous. An alternative is here proposed in which the eastern Walvis Ridge is considered a continental fragment that was originally positioned marginal to Africa.
