Abstract

Insoluble residues from Precambrian graphitic marble from New York and Montana contain incomplete graphite crystals as well as the more abundant dense, lustrous hexagonal flakes. Skeleton forms have a lower order of crystallinity and contain less 13C than the lustrous flakes. Distribution of the two forms indicates small-scale disequilibrium despite the high metamorphic rank of the host rock.
