Abstract

Numerous seismic profiles recently recorded along the Matapan trench (Ionian Sea) provide evidence of probable compressive deformation within the trench and across its outer slope. Three trench structural sectors are clearly indicated. The whole area is tentatively interpreted as an example of progressive trench disorganization, presumably related to the beginning of continental collision.
