The Philippine fault is a major left-lateral strike-slip fault situated between two opposing subduction zones along the Manila Trench and the Philippine Trench. In the absence of a trench-trench transform fault, several authors have suggested that left-lateral shear on the Philippine fault accommodates one component of motion between the Philippine and Eurasian plates. This suggestion is tested in this study by calculating and comparing seismic slip on these three features, through the use of the method of Brune, and a moment versus magnitude relationship developed for the Philippines. It appears from this quantitative study that rate of motion on the Philippine fault is comparable to the slip of the two plates.
