Abstract

Geothermal gradients inferred in geophysical models for the distribution of temperature in the crust are consistent with the pressure-temperature distribution associated with the Lepontine phase of Alpine metamorphism. The P-T distribution associated with a thermal dome requires that there be a difference between P-T curves representing geothermal gradients and those representing P-T relations across an erosion surface. This feature is illustrated by examining a profile through the Lepontine metamorphic terrain.
