Under nonhydrostatic stress the porosity of water-saturated St. Peter sandstone has been reduced by more than 50 percent through pressure solution. The rate of porosity reduction is dependent on the pore fluid pressure. Hydrostatic pressure alone resulted in no porosity reduction, which indicates that shear stress is necessary for the reduction of porosity by pressure solution.
