Archaeocyathids from the lower few metres of the Leithsville Formation in New Jersey correlate with faunas of the Forteau Formation of early Bonnia-Olenellus zone age [ Lenian (=Botomian) or early Elankian ] in Labrador and Newfoundland. The absence of younger Lower Cambrian regressive clastics known throughout most of the Appalachian region strongly suggests the existence of a previously unsuspected major unconformity within the Leithsville and equivalent carbonates of the thin Lower Cambrian sequences from eastern Pennsylvania to northern Massachusetts.
