I thank Wei for highlighting the apparent differences in the causes of the deep-sea benthic foraminiferal extinctions that occurred during the late Paleocene thermal maximum and the middle Pleistocene. He clearly documents some of the difficulties in determining the precise timing of diachronous regional or global extinctions of rare benthic foraminifera and questions the robustness of my conclusions that numbers declined and extinctions occurred during Pleistocene glacial episodes.

There is no question that elongate, cylindrical taxa (e.g., Stilostomellidae, Pleurostomellidae) comprised 50–70% of deep-sea (∼1000–4000 m) benthic foraminifera (in terms of specimen numbers) in the latest Eocene (Thomas, 1990, 1992...
