Perg et al. (2001) present ages for five uplifted marine terraces near Santa Cruz, California, based on soil column inventories of in situ–produced 10Be. These ages are consistent with terrace formation at marine oxygen isotope stages 3, 5a, 5c, 5e, and 7, and imply an uplift rate of 1.1 mm/yr, substantially greater than earlier estimates. Accumulation of 10Be in soils is complex, reflecting processes including inheritance from prior exposure, bioturbation, erosion, and radioactive decay.
