Ernstson et al. (2001) discuss the origin of cratered cobbles in Triassic Buntsandstein conglomerates in northeastern Spain. They conclude that the indentations on the cobbles were induced by shock deformation in the vicinity of large impacts. They report that pebbles are radially cracked at indentation sites and that surface cracks form conical patterns similar to concussion fractures. Furthermore, they report the occurrence of planar deformation features in quartz from zones below cobble craters.
