Mountain development in Colorado occasionally is done below slopes subject to snow avalanches. For such development, it is necessary to evaluate quantitatively the hazard, so that buildings may be designed for tolerable impact loads or the flowing snow may be avoided or diverted. The evaluation must usually be done by indirect methods because large avalanches are seldom observed.

In this paper a method, which may be used in conjunction with existing equations of avalanche flow, to calculate the velocities and impact pressures associated with dense, flowing avalanches is discussed. The method is limited to slopes showing timber damage, a type common to proposed development.
