Abstract
A gridded fault pattern indicated by gravity data is characteristic for the southern Rio Grande rift, New Mexico, and compares with observations of structural trends in the Paleozoic Oslo graben in Norway and other rifted areas. Geological evidence suggests that the detailed structural outline of individual grabens is dependent on the pre-existing pattern of fracture oblique to the main ranges, whereas the overall trend of the rifts reflects deep-seated causes.
