Abstract

The natural remanent magnetism (NRM) of several Muong-Nong tektites was measured and found to vary from 7.9 × 10−6 to 1 × 10−7 gauss cm3 g−1. The characteristics of the NRM suggest that it is a thermoremanent magnetism acquired during the initial cooling of these tektites in a field comparable with the geomagnetic field. This is consistent with the Barnes-Pitakpaivan model of origin of these tektites, which is that they cooled as molten glass splash on Earth.
