Exploration geologists look for methods to help resolve the commercial viability of their projects and in so doing decrease risk. They search for geologic information that will assist in distinguishing potentially favorable from less favorable ground. History has shown that most aspects of fundamental science eventually find economic applications (e.g., Doe and Stacey 1974) but hardly represent panaceas or shortcuts to find a mother lode.
