Hallam (1999) emphasized the importance of distinguishing stratigraphic condensation from significant erosion of consolidated sediment in order to infer past relative sea-level change. He then embellished his previously published accounts of classic British Jurassic exposures (Hallam, 1988). Although we are sympathetic to his philosophic position, we question his descriptions and dispute his specific conclusions.
The first example considered in detail is from the Oxfordian of Dorset, England. Hallam (1999) claimed that concretions in the top Bencliff Grit were truncated before deposition of the overlying Osmington Oolite, and he used this fact to challenge the conclusions of Talbot (1973)...
