In the central Oregon Cascades there is a large region of near-zero near-surface heat flux due to downward and lateral flow of groundwater. Within this region, there are numerous large cold springs. Despite the low temperatures of the springs, about 3.5 °C, the heat discharged at the springs is equivalent to a mean heat flux of 56 mW/m2 and represents approximately half the background heat flux. The rest of the background geothermal heat is advected laterally and discharged at lower elevations.
