Abstract

In a new method to estimate the sedimentation rate along continental margins we made use of a model in which the 10Be in the sediment is considered as a mixture of terrigenous and pelagic components. This method does not depend directly on radioactive decay. It has many advantages over conventional techniques and is especially suitable for areas undergoing rapid deposition. Sedimentation rates on the continental shelf around Taiwan obtained by this method compare favorably with those from 14C dating. Our estimated rates for modern basins in the Taiwan Strait are comparable to the rates in the paleobasins now on land in Taiwan. This similarity suggests that the arc-continent collision on the east side of Taiwan has been driving a migration of its western shoreline toward mainland China.
