Approximate continental paleotemperatures can be inferred from oxygen and hydrogen isotopic analyses of authigenic silica that precipitated within chert lags on paleokarst surfaces. Data for two Proterozoic examples suggest continental weathering temperatures that ranged from 30 to 43 °C. Quantitative results appear possible for rocks at least as old as 1.1 Ga.
