The incomplete flood plain has been warped in such a manner (probably by tectonic deformation) that its upper surface is not the two-dimensional plane that an alluvial river ordinarily builds. The incomplete flood plain is not marked by oxbow lakes and other extensive evidence of channel migration, but rather by lakes, ponds, marshes, and swamps of various sizes and shapes. The Magdalena River valley of Colombia has an incomplete flood plain through almost 1,000 km of its length.
