An experimental deformation of a salt-mica specimen produced a zone impoverished in salt. The structure is similar to differentiated zones impoverished in quartz or calcite in natural pelites. The zone of distinctive composition corresponds to a zone of distinctive strain. The differentiation mechanism is thought to involve outward transport of salt in the pore fluid.
