Abstract
Amphibolite facies schists of anomalously high aluminum and iron content occur along a major unconformity in the Tauern window, Austria. Their stratigraphic position is consistent with a weathering, or paleosol, origin for the protolith; this interpretation is supported by geochemical data. Previous paleosol studies have concentrated on their significance as paleoenvironmental indicators. The use of the Tauern window schists for this purpose is precluded by their metamorphic grade and degree of deformation; however, these and other similar metasoils can serve as valuable field indicators in structurally complicated areas.
