Observations from the 3.55–3.3 Ga Barberton greenstone belt indicate an important phase of shortening synchronous with the deposition of alluvial sediments. The structural style is remarkably similar in scale and geometry to that now occurring on land in the convergent plate-boundary zone in the North Island of New Zealand.
