Abstract
Concordant U-Pb zircon ages of ∼320 Ma for the deformed High Shoals Granite of the Kings Mountain belt (KMB) extend the range of known Alleghanian (late Paleozoic) deformation and metamorphism in the southern Appalachian Piedmont. Isotope systematics in KMB rocks suggest an affinity with terranes to the southeast rather than with the Inner Piedmont belt to the northwest. Lead-isotope systematics in meta-igneous rocks of the KMB suggest direct or indirect mantle derivation with little or no crustal contamination.
