Ten cores from the Baffin Bay area were sampled for paleomagnetic studies. An excursion of Earth's geomagnetic field was recorded in five of the ten cores. Extrapolated ages, assuming a nearly constant sedimentation rate, place the geomagnetic excursion between 129,000 and 161,000 yr B.P., with a duration of 5,000–10,000 yr. The oldest sediments represented in the cores are probably 400,000 yr old.
