A descriptive classification of cross-stratification, developed from the classifications of McKee and Weir (1953) and Allen (1963a), is proposed to include six categories of descriptive terms that refer to sets and four that refer to cross-strata contained within the sets. The terms describe the magnitude, grouping, shape of the lower bounding surface, relations between planar bounding surfaces, relation between lower bounding surface and surrounding strata, and sharpness of lower bounding surface of sets, as well as the dip, shape, relation with lower bounding surface of the set, and homogeneity of grain size of cross-strata.
