In the mountain regions of the Carpathian arch uplifts of 300–400 m are demonstrated at the end of the Pliocene and during the Pleistocene, whereas in the Great Hungarian Basin Quaternary depressions with almost the same depth are present. The rate of recent movement is ± 50–60 mm for each 10 years in the Hungarian Basin.

The most important effect of neotectonic movements appears in the Great Basin in ground-water conditions, shown in pressure anomalies, in the yield of the aquifers, in ground-water movements, and in the chemical character of the water in different aquifers.
