The Hindukush Karakoram Himalaya (HKH) is one of the largest mountain systems on Earth spreading over parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, China, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar covering an area of 4,192,000 km2. The Himalayan mountain ranges give birth to three major river basins viz, The Indus, the Ganges and the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra basin. These river systems sustain about 240 million people directly and more than 2 billion indirectly living in the region.
