Formation of excess fluid pressure, sediment fluidization and mass-transport deposits in the Plio-Pleistocene Boso forearc basin, central Japan
Abstract Analyses of consolidation state, fabrics and physical properties were conducted on rock samples from the Plio-Pleistocene Boso forearc basin, central Japan. Consolidation tests identified that the trend in consolidation yield stress was systematically 8 MPa smaller than expected for the overburden from the sediment thickness of the Kazusa Group. An excess fluid pressure interval was also identified in the lower part of the basin fill, where several large-scale (several kilometres in length and several tens of metres thick) mass-transport deposits (MTDs) are intercalated. This interval is characterized by high porosity and small consolidation yield stresses, indicating that consolidation had been retarded by the excess fluid pressure. The estimated excess fluid pressure was c. 5–7 MPa. In addition, outcrop-scale fluidization and minor liquefaction features were identified within and below the high fluid pressure interval. The excess fluid pressure reduced the effective stress in the Boso forearc basin and, subsequently, the stability of the slope, allowing small tectonic events to generate submarine landslides. Therefore, the formation of these large-scale MTDs was probably related to the excess fluid-pressure generation.

Deformation in a North Sea Jurassic trap analysed using a triaxial plane strain experiment
Abstract A classical Upper Jurassic fault block in the North Sea, the Fulla Structure, has Brent Group sandstones with good reservoir quality and apparently insignificant fault-related reservoir damage. Core data show high-porous sandstones that extend close to the main faults and there is no evidence of catalase, only of soft-sedimentary deformation. Shear bands are relatively thin with high offsets, and have a texture comparable to the wall rock. To investigate the deformation mechanism and products synthetic Brent Group sands are deformed in a triaxial plane strain box with pre-defined effective consolidation in the range of 100–8000 kPa, simulating a burial depth in the range of 10–800 m. This range covers the burial depth at the time of active faulting for most Jurassic traps in the North Sea, including the Fulla Structure. The experiments demonstrate that grain rolling and grain-boundary sliding are the dominant deformation mechanisms at all the simulated burial depths, and this deformation has no impact on the reservoir quality. The experiments concur with observations from the investigated wells and strengthen an interpretation of limited reservoir damage associated with the Late Jurassic fault activity.
Slurry colloidal and particle interaction theory is described and applied to clay mineral suspensions. Mechanisms which affect the colloidal properties of the dewatering behaviour of clay mineral suspensions are described, after which the processes of coagulation and flocculation are discussed. Finally, sedimentation and self-weight consolidation are discussed as the mechanisms by which a low-density slurry transitions to a high-density slurry or soil.
The clay fundamentals explained in the preceding chapters affect the macroscale oil-sands processes discussed in the following chapters of this volume through a series of mesoscale phenomena. Each mesoscale phenomenon is itself the subject of a field of science, and applications to different fields of engineering have led to a confusion of terminology. Understanding the underlying physical processes helps to elucidate the positive and negative effects of clay in oil-sands processes.
The effects of clay on the geotechnical properties of oil-sands tailings deposits are discussed. The sources of fluid fine tailings are reviewed, and types of tailings deposits are described. The effects of clay on geotechnical index properties, hydraulic conductivity, compressibility, and shear strength are discussed, with example predictions for consolidation and strength gain in fines-enriched sand tailings and deep fines-dominated tailings deposits.
