CHALLENGES OF CONSERVATION PALEOBIOLOGY: FROM BASELINES TO NOVEL COMMUNITIES TO THE NECESSITY FOR GRANTING RIGHTS TO NATURE
Abstract It is imperative today to make geoheritage conservation an essential part of all environmental standards and operational procedures. This is because geoheritage conservation secures the preservation of in situ geoheritage elements especially in urban environments such as Auckland. Geoheritage in Auckland is strongly associated with both indigenous culture and textbook geology of monogenetic volcanism, and it can play an important role in hazard forecasting and risk mitigation. To date, there has been a lack of policy or any planning tools based explicitly on the current geopreservation inventory. Here, we present an approach to support policy making informed by a spatial multi-criteria analysis that has long been used in environmental decision-making, supported by multi-layer mapping. A systematic literature review was undertaken to define the most accepted assessment criteria used in geoheritage evaluation. We identified six criteria for the base spatial layers of our analysis, highlighting the most suitable areas for geoheritage conservation. For cultural conservation, we used available archaeological shape files, indigenous land ownership data and elevation data (the volcanic cones had multiple roles in the life of first settlers, the ancestors of the Māori). Geographic Information Systems (GIS) multi-objective land use planning is an effective procedure for achieving complex planning and preservation objectives. It allows for outcomes based on quality data and sound analysis while minimizing compromise and conflict between geoheritage, social and cultural values.
International Geodiversity Day: from grassroots geoscience campaign to UNESCO recognition
Abstract The paper documents the process of proclaiming International Geodiversity Day as a grassroots initiative of the Earth science community for the benefit of our present civilization and for future generations. The huge support that this initiative has gained among scientists around the world has contributed to the rapid circulation of documents necessary to establish an international day at the UNESCO Forum. The paper presents the timeline of this process of proclaiming International Geodiversity Day, its implications and the course of the first celebrations in 2022.
Temporal scales, sampling designs and age distributions in marine conservation palaeobiology
Abstract Conservation palaeobiology informs conservation and restoration of ecosystems by using the fossil record to discriminate between baseline and novel states and to assess ecosystem response to perturbations. Variability in the time-scale of palaeobiological data can generate patterns that either exaggerate or mute the magnitude of biotic changes. We identify two approaches that remedy the challenges associated with the mixing of baseline and post-impact states and with the transformation of the stratigraphic depth to time. First, combining surface death assemblages with both (1) fossil assemblages preserved in the subsurface historical layers and (2) living assemblages can better resolve the nature of ecosystem shifts than within-core surveys or live–dead analyses alone. Second, post-mortem age distributions of skeletal particles and their preservation states are not only informative about stratigraphic resolution and time averaging of death assemblages but also about the timing of changes in abundance of skeletal producers. High abundance of the youngest age cohorts in surface death assemblages is a null expectation of disintegration and burial dynamic. When this dynamic is accounted for, age distributions of benthic invertebrates from Holocene sediments often reveal high volatility, prolonged turn-offs in production or pervasive regime shifts that are obscured in the raw stratigraphic record.
Addressing challenges in marine conservation with fish otoliths and their death assemblages
Abstract Otolith death assemblages provide a valuable source of biological and ecological information that can help address three main problems in marine conservation: (a) the lack of pre-industrial, pre-human-impact baselines for evaluating change; (b) the inefficiency of survey methods for recording small and cryptic fish species; and (c) the absence of long-term data on environmental change impacts on marine ecosystems and fishes. We review here the current knowledge on the formation and preservation of otoliths and their death assemblages, and the methods to obtain, date and analyse them in order to detect changes in the species traits and ecology, the fish population structure and the palaeoceanographic shifts that drove them.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MUSEUM IN ANTEBELLUM U.S. WESTERN TERRITORIAL EXPLORATION: PART 2. THE ROLES OF HAYDEN AND MEEK IN A PARADIGM SHIFT IN GEOLOGIC AND PALEONTOLOGIC STUDIES
Erosion due to a century of road construction and maintenance at Mount Diablo State Park, California
ABSTRACT Mount Diablo State Park exemplifies many other conservation areas where managers balance the dual missions of protecting natural resources while providing public access. Roads and trails that crisscross the park are etched into the geomorphic surface, capturing and redirecting storm runoff, and presenting both a challenge for soil conservation and a consequence of construction and maintenance. We used field mapping, remote sensing, and modeling to assess erosion along the roads and trails in Mount Diablo State Park, which encompasses the headwaters of several urbanized watersheds. The field mapping in 2011 determined that 56% of the assessed roads and trails required either repair or reconstruction to control erosion and that ~67% of the culverts in the park required either repair or replacement. Aerial photography and modeling showed that other erosion (unrelated to roads or trails) preferentially occurred during wet periods, in specific lithologies, and on convergent slopes. Although lithology and climate drive slope-forming geomorphic processes, we found that the road and trail system (1) expanded the stream network with a capillary-like system of rills, (2) catalyzed prolonged erosion, and (3) altered the timing and pattern of sediment yield. In addition to water-driven erosion during wet periods, road and trail surfaces were subject to mechanical and wind erosion during dry periods. Spatially, dry erosion and runoff both conformed with and crossed topographic gradients by following the road and trail network. Road- and trail-induced erosion occurred across a wider range of rock properties and slope geometries than is typical for other erosion. Hence, the roads and trails have expanded the spatial and temporal boundary conditions over which geomorphic processes operate and, due to continual soil disturbance, have accelerated erosion rates. Although road density is a commonly used metric to rank road-related impacts at watershed scales, it misses both spatial variability and the opportunity to identify specific road and trail segments for remediation. We developed a spatially explicit scoring scheme based on actual erosion and the potential for sedimentation of discrete waterbodies. The data were incorporated into the park’s road and trail management plan in 2016.
