Abstract Stable isotope ratios of cave bat guano reflect environmental influences at the soil and plant level within the foraging range of the bats. Carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen isotopes have utility in reconstructing precipitation and temperature as well as in tracing the influence of large-scale atmospheric circulation and climate variability. Guano-derived stable isotope time series have been demonstrated to effectively provide high-resolution records of palaeoenvironmental variation from the late Pleistocene to present. Owing to their influence on these isotopes, factors such as bat ecology, species foraging range and site location must be considered when interpreting such records. Research analysing the isotopic composition of guano has provided a highly resolved history of vegetation and climate dynamics previously less understood. In this chapter we discuss the factors influencing the δ 13 C, δ 15 N and δ 2 H values in guano and provide an up-to-date review of cave guano as palaeo-climate archive.
Frost action and human occupation during the Late Pleistocene in the Italian Southern Alps: micromorphological evidences from the Caverna Generosa cave

Comparison of Neotoma (packrat) feces to associated sediments from Paisley Caves, Oregon, U.S.A
ABSTRACT In this study, we present a composite δ 18 O and δ 13 C record obtained from four speleothems from the Grotta Grande del Vento Cave, located within the Frasassi karst system, northeastern Apennines of central Italy. The ages were determined by U-series analysis, employing thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), and the composite isotopic profile covers most of the time period from ca. 95,000 yr B.P. until ca. 10,000 yr B.P., including the last part of marine isotope stage (MIS) 5, most of the last glacial (MIS 4–2), and the earliest Holocene (MIS 1), with a hiatus lasting from ca. 65,000 to ca. 55,000 yr B.P. We compared this record with other speleothem records from the Eastern Mediterranean, with caves from western Portugal, with two marine records from the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea, and with the North Greenland Ice Core Project (NGRIP) ice-core record. The Frasassi speleothem record provides further insight for a wider regional understanding of the paleoclimate record through the discrepancies and similarities between the northeastern Apennines of central Italy and the Western, Eastern, and northeastern Mediterranean regions. The time interval between ca. 86,000 and 83,000 yr B.P. shows low δ 18 O values in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean speleothems and the marine records. This period coincides with sapropel (S3) and is associated with increased hydrological activity and warming. On the other hand, Frasassi speleothem δ 18 O data do not show a similar low trend, suggesting that increased hydrological activity either did not reach the Frasassi region and/or the region received rainfall from other sources and/or the proportion of winter-summer rainfall was different. Another interval in which different conditions prevailed in the Frasassi region is during the transition from MIS 5 to glacial MIS 4, from ca. 83,000 to 65,000 yr B.P., when Frasassi speleothem δ 18 O values decreased, whereas all other records show a clear increase in δ 18 O. Comparison with the NGRIP record suggests that Northern Hemisphere temperature changes are reflected in Frasassi speleothem δ 18 O fluctuations during this interval. A major pronounced isotopic event associated with warming and pluvial conditions during the last glacial evident in the entire Mediterranean region between ca. 54,500 and 52,500 yr B.P. is recorded also in the Frasassi speleothem isotopic profile. This event is followed by a transition from wet and warm climatic conditions to cold conditions. The end of the last glacial is associated with climate instability, evident mainly from the very large oscillations in the Frasassi δ 13 C record. The transition from the last glacial to early Holocene is characterized by a decreasing trend in δ 18 O and a sharp increase in δ 13 C values.

A New Unified Model For Cave Pearls: Insights from Cave Pearls in Carlsbad Cavern, New Mexico, U.s.a.
Abstract The Puerto Princesa Underground River, amongst the largest caves of the Philippine Islands, is the most visited show cave in the country, even though it has undergone no tourism adaptation at all. Its scientific importance primarily relies on the fact that it is one of the largest known underground estuaries in the world, and the effect of tides is visible along more than 7 km of the cave length. The complex relationships between sea and freshwater influence not only the hydrodynamics of the system and the speleogenetic processes presently active, but also its climate and its ecosystem. The systematic exploration and research of this coastal karst system started some 40 years ago and have shown that the Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the most important caves in the world with regard to many different scientific fields. Speleogenesis concerns the initial phreatic solution followed by vadose erosion with periodical marine invasion, and subsequent saline/freshwater-mixing processes during sea-level highstands. The hydrodynamic behaviour of the water flowing inside the cave is rather complex, being simultaneously controlled by allogenic recharge and tides. Speleothems abundantly occur with several forms, some of which have never been described before. Several minerals, some of which are very rare, are present, together with palaeontological remains exposed by differential corrosion on rock walls. Last but not least, two large populations of bats and swiftlets sustain a complex subterranean ecosystem.
Models of temperature, entropy production and convective airflow in caves
Abstract Three major problems in cave micrometeorology are analysed: the concept of the temperature of a cave and its phenomenology; the internal energy flows and consequent local entropy production; and a non-hydrostatic physical model of the underground convective air circulation. A cave’s temperature is rich in information, but it is often difficult to obtain because it requires experimental accuracies to be pushed beyond the reach of common external meteorological instruments to detect a variety of factors, such as thermal sedimentation, seasonal variations and the effects of external morphology. Energy flow has an essential role in estimating the sensitivity of a cave to external inputs. A model for evaluating the local entropy production is developed. Entropy seems to be the most basic parameter, explaining both the sensitivity of the environment and its tendency to form complex structures. Analysis of the second-order terms of convective air circulation is more complex than expected; nevertheless, only such an analysis is able to explain the behaviours (e.g. continuity in the airflow) that cannot be predicted by the first-order models.
