A “natural sand plant” at the shelf edge in the low-energy Gulf of Lions, western Mediterranean Sea
Abstract Tidal channels exert a crucial control on sediment transport and drive geomorphic changes in the tidal environment. Despite their ubiquitous occurrence, long-term morphodynamics and processes driving the morphologic changes remain less well understood than fluvial counterparts. Spanning from straight to dendritic, Korean tidal channels become more sinuous and densely populated with elevation due to higher mud content. Mutually evasive current patterns resulted in a cuspate meander bend, where a flood barb develops at the seaward side of the bend. Multiannual observation revealed that tidal channels migrate from up to 80 m per year in the lower intertidal zone of open-coast sandy tidal flats to nearly stationary for several years in the upper intertidal zone of protected muddy tidal flats. Migration rates are temporarily pronounced during the summer monsoon, when heavy rainfall-induced surface runoff intensifies ebb tidal asymmetry and promotes headward erosion. Meander bends are mostly landward-skewed and shift downstream, implying that ebb currents primarily drive the long-term channel morphodynamics. Tidal point bars commonly display ebbward dipping, inclined heterolithic stratification (IHS) dominated by bedforms formed by subordinate flood tidal currents. An overall ebb dominance and mutually evasive current patterns account for the counterintuitive stratigraphic architecture of point bars in Korean tidal channels.

ABSTRACT Sedimentation after wildfire is a profound disturbance to the biogeomorphic character of fluvial systems. Despite this significant alteration, field data focusing on the geomorphic processes and bed morphology that form the physical structure of habitat are limited, especially over a longer-term perspective. We report results of detailed field studies following two wildfires in the same steep fluvial system in the southern California Transverse Ranges three decades apart. Substantial channel sedimentation during storms following both fires altered physical elements of habitat, which included bed elevation, step height and spacing, pool depth and spacing, grain-size distribution ( D 84 ), and transport capacity (τ o /τ c ). The postfire sediment deposits buried bedforms, decreased D 84 , and increased τ o /τ c by an order of magnitude. Incision during subsequent storms initiated recovery that depended on the attributes of post-wildfire climate variability that characterize the semiarid Mediterranean-type environment. Step-pool bedforms reappeared or reformed during the decades between wildfires as the relatively fine gravel-sized post-wildfire sediment was transported downstream, thus reestablishing the physical elements of habitat characterizing the dynamic system.

Abstract Our paper presents the first draft of a geomorphological map of the German North Sea and Baltic Sea. The inspiration for this map comes from the international collaboration of marine researchers within the European EMODnet Geology Project ( https://www.emodnet-geology.eu/ ). The current climate change intensifies the natural processes of change in nature. Within the framework of various nature conservation projects, the importance of marine sediment structures on marine fauna and their reproductive cycles, sedimentation conditions, currents, etc. has been investigated. In order to be able to make statements for the German seas and document changes, the current state must first be recorded.

ABSTRACT The Uinta Basin of eastern Utah is an intermontane basin that contains an ~2-km-thick succession of mostly carbonate-rich mudrock assigned to the Eocene Green River Formation. In the southwest part of the basin, along Nine Mile Canyon and its tributary canyons, the middle member of the Green River Formation contains numerous interbedded sand bodies. Previous researchers have interpreted these sand bodies variably as lacustrine deltaic mouth bars, terminal fluvial distributary bars, and various types of fluvial (delta plain/floodplain/braid plain) bar. Using some modern western U.S. lakes as partial analogues, and taking into account the overall lacustrine basin context of a widely fluctuating, wave-influenced, alkaline-lake shoreline, we again interpret many of the sand bodies to be fluvial in origin. Several sand bodies both truncate and are capped by brown to red-maroon and variegated weak to noncalcareous mudstone with root and desiccation structures, indicating terrestrial deposition well away from the lake shoreline. Others display steep cutbanks from which noncalcareous, inclined heterolithic stratification laterally accreted as fluvial side bars. Utilizing helicopter-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, we investigated additional sand bodies that may be better examples of deltaic mouth bars. In contrast to the more commonly documented highstand progradational mouth bars of marine and open lake settings, these sand bodies are interpreted to have originated as late-lowstand or transgressive system tract fluvial channels that were then flooded and modified by waves following lake transgression. These examples illustrate that any large-scale sandy bed form present in the general vicinity of a closed basin’s fluctuating lake shore may be expected to have formed under more than one set of environmental conditions. A revised set of guidelines is therefore presented to aid in the interpretation of lacustrine deltaic mouth bars.

ABSTRACT The Matanuska lowland north of Anchorage, Alaska, was episodically glaciated during the Pleistocene by the merged westward flow of the Matanuska and Knik glaciers. During the late Wisconsin glaciation, glacial Lake Atna filled the Copper River Basin, impounded by an ice dam blocking the Matanuska drainage divide at Tahneta Pass and the adjacent Squaw Creek headwaters and ice dams at other basin outlets, including the Susitna and Copper rivers. On the Matanuska lowland floor upvalley from the coalesced glacier’s late-Wisconsin terminus, a series of regularly spaced, symmetrical ridges with 0.9-km wavelengths and heights to 36 m are oriented normal to oblique to the valley and covered by smaller subparallel ridges with wavelengths typically ~80 m and amplitudes to 3 m. These and nearby drumlins, eskers, and moraines were previously interpreted to be glacial in origin. Borrow-pit exposures in the large ridges, however, show sorting and stratification, locally with foreset bedding. A decade ago we reinterpreted such observations as evidence of outburst flooding during glacial retreat, driven by water flushing from Lake Atna through breaches in the Tahneta Pass and Squaw Creek ice dam. In this view, the ridges once labeled Rogen and De Geer moraines were reinterpreted as two scales of fluvial dunes. New observations in the field and from meter-scale light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (IfSAR) digital elevation models, together with grain-size analyses and ground-penetrating radar profiles, provide further evidence that portions of the glacial landscape of the Matanuska lowlands were modified by megaflooding after the Last Glacial Maximum, and support the conclusion that the Knik Glacier was the last active glacier in the lowland.
