Abstract The purpose of this Seals Atlas is to present the microstructural, petrophysical, and geomechanical properties of selected examples of cap rocks and fault seals for use as analogs in the prediction of seal capacity or containment potential. Similar atlases exist; however, this is the first such atlas to focus specifically on the characteristics of cap rocks. The atlas is primarily based on extensive mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) analyses, but also includes thin section, XRD, grainsize distribution, SEM/EDS, and 'V shale' data. The samples included in this atlas are a result of APCRC and CO2CRC (Cooperative Research Centres) research programs focusing on top and intraformational seals and some fault seals (cataclasites) throughout Australia and New Zealand. The hydrocarbon/carbon dioxide seal examples are grouped by basin localities and further distinguished by formation, well, then depth. Where multiple examples are available, a range of lithologies and MICP data are included in the sample selection. This atlas also can be used in an evaluation of integrated seal potential for prospect risking and reservoir management.

Abstract Tor H. Nilsen, a red-haired Scandinavian who stood more than six feet tall, died October 9, 2005, at his San Carlos, California, home. This was after a valiant five-year fight with melanoma cancer. He was 63. His ashes were scattered at his family plot in Norway in 2006. He was born in New York City on November 29, 1941, to Mollie Abrahamson and Nils Marius Nilsen of Mandal, Norway, and was the first of their children to be born in the United States. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech, he earned his B.S. in geology from City College of New York in 1962. While there, his prowess on the basketball court impressed a scout from the New York Knicks, but Tor went on to graduate school and earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in geology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1964 and 1967, respectively. His M.S. thesis was a study of Precambrian metasedimentary deposits in the Lake Superior area, and his Ph.D. thesis was a study of Devonian alluvial-fan deposits of the Old Red Sandstone in western Norway. Dr. Nilsen’s principal expertise was in depositional systems analysis, stratigraphic analysis, and the relationships among tectonics, eustasy, and sedimentation. He began his industry career in 1967 as a research geologist with the Shell Development Company in Houston, Texas, and Ventura, California, where he worked on the tectonics and sedimentation of Tertiary shelf systems of coastal California. He subsequently spent two years with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as the Military

Abstract Why an atlas of the Carboniferous in northern England? There can hardly be a more researched system in the whole of the British Isles, given its widespread distribution at outcrop and annual appearances in numerous PhD theses (including those of the authors). But perhaps all we really know about the Carboniferous is no more than skimming the surface. In this atlas, using modern multifold seismic and borehole data collected by the oil industry in its search for petroleum accumulations, we can start to look beyond the surface exposures and gain some new insights into the structure and stratigraphy of the subsurface (and surface) Carboniferous. The unique appeal of this atlas of seismic sections is that it is based on data from onshore UK. Although these lines were originally shot as small segments targeting individual prospects and trends, they have been spliced together to produce a series of basin-scale regional lines which should be of value to academic researchers and industry alike. With this atlas, we can walk the seismic lines at outcrop and in many cases compare exposure to both the seismic data and associated palaeofacies maps.
Abstract Course Note 41 represents a unique documentation of the wide variety of structural styles in the offshore Niger Delta region. Twenty-five seismic profiles are presented for their structural and sequential stratigraphic interpretation. Each is accompanied by instructions and discussion and keyed to a line drawing of a regional profile. These materials, together with background information and a reprint of a key article, not only provide a realistic context for geologic education but they are also highly relevant to global deepwater exploration.
