Off-sequence plume magmatism near Ninetyeast Ridge in the Indian Ocean: evidence for extensive lateral flow of the Kerguelen plume
ABSTRACT Voluminous bimodal volcanic rocks of the Silurian (ca. 422–420 Ma) Dickie Cove Group in the Ganderia domain of northern New Brunswick, Canada, are subaerial units that were deposited in an extensional setting, with the mafic types corresponding to continental tholeiites. Felsic rocks are rhyolites with calc-alkaline affinities. They exhibit geochemical characteristics that are typical of A2-type felsic magmas, such as enrichments in the incompatible elements Zr, Nb, and Y, as well as high FeO*/(FeO* + MgO) and Ga/Al ratios. Their ε Nd ( t ) values are positive (+0.7 to +3.4) but lower than those of the associated basalts. Saturation thermometry has yielded average zircon crystallization temperature estimates for the rhyolites that are well above 900 °C. The geochemical data indicate that the felsic melts were likely sourced from heterogeneous Neoproterozoic lower crust and generated by dehydration melting triggered by heat derived from underplated mafic magma. Parent melts of the rhyolites underwent fractional crystallization in a complex magma chamber prior to eruption. The Nd isotopic data suggest that the lower crust of Ganderia is similar to that of Avalonia in northern mainland Nova Scotia, and that the two microcontinents shared a common Neoproterozoic history and origin as continental blocks rifted from neighboring parts of Gondwana. The tectono-magmatic setting of the Dickie Cove Group volcanic rocks is interpreted as being related to Pridolian, post-Salinic relaxation and slab breakoff, which generated volcanism initially constrained within the Chaleur zone of the Chaleur Bay synclinorium, a large domain of the northern Appalachians. This was followed later in the Pridolian by extensional collapse and widening of the area of magmatic activity, which then prograded into the Tobique zone farther to the southwest.
Flood basalt structures and textures as guides to cooling histories and palaeoclimates: the Deccan Traps of Saurashtra, western India
Abstract The Changbaishan volcanic field located on the Gaima (Gaema, Gaiman) Plateau has witnessed plateau-forming eruptions along with the uplift of the Gaima Plateau. The Tianchi basaltic lava shield volcano was formed at the main peak of Changbaishan, with cone construction eruptions that formed a huge and steep trachytic composite cone on the gentle lava shield. At the peak of the Millennium Eruption (ME), the height of the eruption column reached 25 km and the bulk volume of tephra was about 120 km 3 . The ME eventually formed Tianchi caldera, after which several eruptions occurred, albeit of a much smaller scale. The magmas involved in the shield-forming eruptions are characterized by both alkalic series trachybasalt and basaltic trachyandesite and subalkalic tholeiite and basaltic andesite. In the cone-construction and ignimbrite-forming eruption stages, the magma is completely composed of alkalic series trachyte and comendite. The largest negative Eu anomalies observed in ME magmas indicate that plagioclase was strongly crystallized and differentiated.
The Late Cenozoic volcanic groups in the South Daxing'anling, NE China: geology, geochemistry, and chronology
Abstract During the late Cenozoic, the extensional tectonic setting in northeastern China caused large-scale block uplifts and depressions, and thus a large amount of magma erupted along structural fractures in the eastern Inner Mongolia, NE China. The Abaga, Beilike, Dalinor and Wulanhada (ABDW) volcanic rocks along the Daxing'anling–Taihangshan Gravity Lineament in the southern section of the Daxing'anling are characterized by their extensive distribution, numerous volcanic cones and various eruption types. Each volcanic group has distinctive volcanic landforms and geochemical characteristics. The geochronological data have revealed that the volcanism spanned Miocene to late Pleistocene. The ABDW volcanic rocks contain primary alkaline basalts and subordinate tholeiites. The trace element curve pattern is similar to that of ocean island basalt, but completely different from that of mid ocean ridge basalt, while the light rare earth elements are more enriched than the heavy rare earth elements. The geochemical features of the volcanic rocks and the entrained mantle xenoliths reveal the broad heterogeneities of the lithospheric mantle and varieties of the volcanic rock evolution in the south Daxing'anling. The Cenozoic volcanism in eastern Inner Mongolia, and even within the east Asian plate, is attributed to the westward subduction and rolling backward of the Pacific slab, as well as the trench retreat.
On the volcanic architecture, petrology and geodynamic setting of the 3.48 Ga Barberton komatiite suite, South Africa
Abstract This study discusses the petrological and geochemical features of two monogenetic Miocene volcanoes, Mount Early and Sheridan Bluff, which are the above-ice expressions of Earth's southernmost volcanic field located at c. 87° S on the East Antarctic Craton. Their geochemistry is compared to basalts from the West Antarctic Rift System to test affiliation and resolve mantle sources and cause of melting beneath East Antarctica. Basaltic lavas and dykes are olivine-phyric and comprise alkaline (hawaiite and mugearite) and subalkaline (tholeiite) types. Trace element abundances and ratios (e.g. La/Yb, Nb/Y, Zr/Y) of alkaline compositions resemble basalts from the West Antarctic rift and ocean islands (OIB), while tholeiites are relatively depleted and approach the concentrations levels of enriched mid-ocean ridge basalt (E-MORB). The magmas evolved by fractional crystallization with contamination by crust; however, neither process can adequately explain the contemporaneous eruption of hawaiite and tholeiite at Sheridan Bluff. Our preferred scenario is that primary magmas of each type were produced by different degrees of partial melting from a compositionally similar mantle source. The nearly simultaneous generation of lower degrees of melting to produce alkaline types and higher degrees of melting forming tholeiite was most likely to have been facilitated by the detachment and dehydration of metasomatized mantle lithosphere.

Chapter 3: Pre-Late Cretaceous basement terranes of the Gondwana active margin of New Caledonia
Abstract The basement under the Late Cretaceous unconformity in New Caledonia consists of three amalgamated terranes. They are all oceanic, arc-related and developed offshore from the eastern Gondwana active margin during periods of marginal basin development. Téremba Terrane is composed of deep sea Permian to Mesozoic arc-derived volcanic rocks and greywackes. The Koh–Central Terrane includes at its base an ophiolite with island arc tholeiites and boninites (Koh Ophiolite) of Late Carboniferous to Early Permian age overlain by a thick sequence of greywacke (Central Range Volcaniclastic Rocks) of Permian to Late Jurassic age. The Téremba Terrane and the Koh–Central Terrane may be part of the same forearc basin, with the rocks from the Koh–Central Terrane deposited in a deeper environment. The Boghen Terrane is a metamorphic complex composed of schists, broken formations and mafic–ultramafic mélange, derived from mixed terrigenous and volcanic sources. The overall fine grain size and laminar bedding suggest deep sea and more distal deposition than the other terranes. The maximum depositional ages from detrital zircons suggest deposition during the Early Jurassic to Early Cretaceous. The terrane is interpreted as a metamorphosed subduction complex that includes blueschist and greenschist facies metamorphic rocks exhumed through the Koh–Central Terrane. At a regional scale, the nature of these three pre-Late Cretaceous terranes confirms the existing palaeogeographical reconstructions, which locate New Caledonia outboard the ocean–continent subduction that surrounded Gondwana during the Paleozoic and Early Mesozoic. A detailed analysis of these terranes and their relationship with East Australian terranes of the same age shows that a marginal basin system probably existed between mainland Gondwana and proto-New Caledonia and closed before the Late Cretaceous. A tentative detailed reconstruction of this margin during the Carboniferous–Early Cretaceous period is proposed.
