Extent and significance of the Upper Ordovician felsic volcanism in the Pyrenees and Mouthoumet Massifs, SW Europe Available to Purchase
Abstract New geochronological (U–Pb isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry), geochemical and isotopic data from Upper Ordovician felsic volcanic rocks recorded in the Pyrenees and Mouthoumet massifs, SW Europe, suggest that this volcanic activity is more widely represented than previously accepted, and allows a better refinement of the age span involved in the Sardic Unconformity. This Sandbian volcanism represents the final pulse of the Sardic tectonothermal event, starting with the Floian–Darriwilian emplacement of voluminous plutonic rocks and the contemporaneous erosion of the uplifted pre–Upper Ordovician basement, and followed by a tholeiitic volcanism contemporaneous with extensional features and the opening of (half-)grabens finally sealed by Hirnantian glaciomarine deposits. The Sardic-related lithospheric extension may be linked to thermal doming originated by a superplume activity that caused, in turn, an extensive crustal melting responsible for the onset of the felsic (calc-alkaline-dominated), Floian–Darriwilian intrusive and Sandbian extrusive magmatism along the northern margin of Gondwana.

The Ordovician of Sardinia (Italy): from the ‘Sardic Phase’ to the end-Ordovician glaciation, palaeogeography and geodynamic context Available to Purchase
Abstract This review illustrates the most important features of the Ordovician successions of the Sardinian basement. We focus on the stratigraphy and tectonic structures in the tectonic units of the External and Nappe zones of the Variscan basement. The Ordovician successions are characterized by unconformities related to tectonic events ascribed to the Sardic and Sarrabese phases. The different durations of the unconformity-related gaps in the External (17 myr) and Nappe (6 myr) zones, recent work on the trilobite fossil content, and the occurrence of a volcanic arc only in the Nappe Zone (Sarrabus and Gerrei units) highlight significant discrepancies suggesting that these domains did not share the same geodynamic setting and palaeogeographical position during the Ordovician. This implies they were amalgamated only in Variscan times. Whereas for the external and nappe zones the Ordovician features are clear, the high-grade metamorphic Inner Zone, where numerous Ordovician ortho- and para-gneiss occur, more detailed studies are needed to define a complete framework for the Ordovician evolution of Sardinia. The present revision of data for the best-preserved succession of Sardinian tectonic units suggests that at least two distinct terranes, which did not share the same Ordovician evolution, were only amalgamated during the Variscan Orogeny.

The Last Glacial Maximum Balearic Abyssal Plain megabed revisited Available to Purchase
Abstract Megabeds are thick sedimentary layers extending over thousands of square kilometres in deep-sea basins and are thought to result from large slope failures triggered by major external events. Such deposits have been found in at least three areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Although their discovery dates back to the early 1980s, many questions remain concerning their initiation, source area, extent and the nature of their emplacement. One of the largest previously documented megabeds was emplaced during the Last Glacial Maximum across the Balearic Abyssal Plain, with a thickness of 8–10 m in water depths of up to 2800 m. New 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiles and sediment cores provide greater constraints on the lateral variability of the megabed and allow it to be mapped beyond previous estimates, with a revised areal extent of 90 000–100 000 km 2 . The megabed terminations show a gradual pinchout to the west and an abrupt eastward termination against the steep Sardinia margin. The megabed presents, in seismic profiles and sediment cores, a tripartite subdivision, which most likely corresponds to the changes in flow regimes across the basin, with a central area of sandy facies and an erosional base oriented NNE–SSW; this allows renewed discussions about the sources and triggers of the megabed.
