Explosive-effusive-explosive: The role of magma ascent rates and paths in modulating caldera eruptions
Abstract In this study, we collect and translate observations and witness accounts suggestive of volcanic eruptions in ancient and modern China. The documents from the literature covered confirmed volcanic eruptions and suspected volcanic events. Recorded events concerning Tianchi ( c. 946 AD), Wudalianchi (1720, 1721) and Ashikule (1951) volcanoes relate to confirmed volcanic eruptions. Detailed records of Tianchi eruptions in historical documents span from 946 to 1903 AD. The real-time observations of the 1720–21 eruptions recorded by the government are presented. They describe a violent explosion and the development of lava flows at Laoheishan volcano. Evidence for events suggestive of volcanic activity are also presented for Dayingshan (1609, Tengchong), Man'anling (1883, Haikou), Chahayan (Heilongjiang), the South China Sea, Kui-shan Tao (late 1770s, Taiwan) and Penjia Islet (19 May 1916 and 29 June 1927, Taiwan). However, some supposed historical volcanic activities including Helanshan (Ningxia), Datong volcano, Rendagou (Sichuan) and Shizishan (Hunan) remain highly suspect according to their unclear positions and rough geological settings. These events may arise from the spontaneous combustion of coal. Records in Tianshan and Beiting Beishan (Xinjiang) may represent mud volcanoes. One case of an ancient Chinese Fengshui master interpreting geological processes from mythology is helpful when inspecting volcanology-related myths.

Abstract Tephra beds are considered to be potential failure planes for submarine landslides. Here, we report on an example of a coarse-ash/lapilli-tuff bed influencing translational slides. The studied mass-transport deposit (MTD) is intercalated in the Pleistocene forearc basin fill exposed in east-central Japan. This MTD consists of stacked siltstone blocks resulting from repeated imbricate thrusts branching from the décollement. The basal slide plane is located immediately below a pumice-rich coarse ash/lapilli-tuff bed. The material comprising the slip zone is injected into the overlying coarse-ash/lapilli-tuff bed, suggesting an upwards escape of excess porewater that resulted from elevated pore pressure. To explain this mode of occurrence, we propose that the detachment preferentially occurred at the top and base of the coarse-ash-tuff-rich interval which appears to have been stronger relative to the adjacent silt-dominated interval. The pumiceous coarse-ash and lapilli-tuff bed behaved as a rigid plate on top of the high-pore-pressure slip zone, which sustained the translational slide on the gentle continental slope. Therefore, in translational submarine landslides, the preferential formation of a slide plane is caused by differing frictional resistances in the layered sediments.
The Late Bronze Age Eruption of Santorini Volcano and Its Impact on the Ancient Mediterranean World

ABSTRACT The golden pumice deposit (unit K1) represents one of the latest episodes of Hawaiian fountaining in the Keanakāko‘i Tephra and is the product of the first high fountaining eruption at Kīlauea summit in ~300 yr, since the caldera formed in ca. 1500 CE. We present a new physical characterization of the deposit based on over 200 field sites, all affected by severe erosion, alteration, and silicic encrusting. We detail the deposit geometry, stratigraphic and structural relationships, and componentry to constrain its volume and reconstruct the eruptive sequence. The deposit is then discussed and set against other young episodes of high fountaining at Kīlauea. We interpret the golden pumice as the product of a days-long eruptive sequence with a source located inside a caldera much deeper than that of today. The eruption probably started along a NE-SW–oriented fissure and migrated toward a single vent in the southwestern part of the caldera, where at least two high Hawaiian-style fountains produced a tephra deposit of ~6 × 10 6 m 3 . Stratigraphic contacts reveal that erosion occurred not only between, but also during the fountaining episodes, suggesting heavy rainfall during deposition. Field observations during this study also led to the discovery of the first stratigraphic evidence that the eastern pumice postdates the golden pumice, which contributes to the new definition of the stratigraphy of the Keanakāko‘i Tephra presented in this volume.
