ABSTRACT Continuous sediment, pollen, and charcoal records were developed from an 8.46-m-long sediment core taken from Hermit Lake in the northern Sangre de Cristo mountain range of Colorado. Presently, vegetation around the lake is upper subalpine forest, consisting of Picea engelmannii (Englemann spruce) with some Abies lasiocarpa (subalpine fir), and the lake lies >200 m below present tree line. We used several pollen ratios to reconstruct the relative position of the tree line and the occurrence of clay layers to infer landscape instability through time. Deglaciation of the Hermit Lake drainage began during the Bølling-Allerød interval. Between ca. 13.5 and 12.4 ka, high Artemisia (sagebrush) pollen abundance, low Picea / Pinus (spruce/pine; S/P) ratios, and sporadic occurrence of Picea macrofossils indicate alpine tundra-spruce conditions. Though the pollen record shows no transition to the Younger Dryas, the subsequent absence of Picea needle fragments suggests a lowering of tree line. By ca. 10.2 ka, a subalpine forest of Picea and Pinus grew there. Based on pollen ratios, tree line was higher than today from ca. 9.0 to ca. 3.8 ka, after which the tree line began to lower to its present elevation. Maximum expansion of the Picea-Abies subalpine forest, determined from both pollen and macrofossils, was coincident with the highest influx of charcoal particles and maximum deposition of postfire erosion (clay layers) into the lake. The period ca. 7.8–6.2 ka was the driest period, as shown by aquatic indicators, but pollen ratios suggest that ca. 6.2–3.8 ka was the warmest period of the Holocene, accompanied by high rates of burning, and consequently elevated erosion of clays into the lake. During the late Holocene, declining S/P ratios are interpreted as declining alpine tree line, while decreases in both Picea to Artemisia (S/Art) and Pinus to Artemisia (P/Art) ratios suggest climate cooling. Pollen evidence suggests expansion of the lower-elevation Colorado piñon ( Pinus edulis ), which has been documented as part of a widespread phenomenon noted by other studies.
Modern Pollen-vegetation Relationships along the Vegetation Gradient in the Bhagirathi Valley, Western Himalaya, India
ABSTRACT The northern Rocky Mountain Trench of eastern British Columbia is a broad valley mantled by glaciolacustrine terraces supporting a complex mix of mesic-temperate (“interior wet belt”) forests that are strongly affected by terrain and substrate. Neither the geomorphic history during early Holocene deglaciation nor the vegetation history of the origin of the Tsuga heterophylla (western hemlock) and Thuja plicata (western redcedar) populations in the interior wet-belt forest is well understood. Sediment cores were obtained from two lakes, 10 km apart and occupying different terraces (83 m elevational difference), and these were compared to existing fire-history and paleoclimate reconstructions. Radiocarbon dates and a mapped terrain classification indicate the upper terrace formed as a lacustrine and glaciofluvial kame terrace hundreds of years prior to the lower terrace, which was formed by glaciolacustrine sediments of a proglacial lake. The minimum limiting ages of these terraces correlate with dated jökulhlaup deposits of the Fraser River. The upper site’s first detectable pollen at >11.0 ka was dominated by light-seeded pioneer taxa (Poaceae [grasses], Artemisia [sagebrush], and Populus [aspen]) followed by a peak in Pinus (pine) and finally dominance by Betula (birch) at 10.2 ka. Pollen data suggest an earlier invasion of T. heterophylla (western hemlock) (by ca. 8 ka) than previously understood. Wetlands on extensive, poorly drained, glaciolacustrine soils promoted the persistence of boreal taxa and open forests (e.g., Picea mariana [black spruce]), while the better-drained upper kame terrace promoted development of closed-canopy shade-tolerant taxa. Invasion and expansion of mesic cedar-hemlock taxa progressed since at least the middle Holocene but was highly constrained by edaphic controls.
First evidence for the conifer Pinus , as Pinuxylon selmeierianum sp. nov., during the Paleogene on Wootton Peninsula, northern Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada
Taxonomy of Cretaceous–Paleogene coniferous woods and their distribution in fossil Lagerstätten of the high latitudes
ABSTRACT Anatomical analyses of fossil woods, supplemented by information from coal petrographic investigations, provide data for reconstructing the Cretaceous–Paleogene, mostly swampy woodland vegetation of the high latitudes. This paper is focused on the taxonomic description of conifers that have been recovered from a number of plant fossil Lagerstätten in Nathorstland, Yukon North Slope–western Mackenzie Delta, Ellesmere Island, northern Trolleland, and Kotel’nyi Island. The investigation revealed a relatively low taxonomic diversity. Wood-anatomical identification of Taxodioxylon vanderburghii provides evidence for the genus Metasequoia . The determination of Glyptostroboxylon cf. rudolphii demonstrates the most likely presence of Glyptostrobus , and the genus Cunninghamia is proved by the identification of Glyptostroboxylon tenerum . Moreover, this first evidence of Cunninghamia in the high latitudes establishes this plant as an “Arctic conifer.” Piceoxylon laricinoides (Høeg) comb. nov., a new combination, is proposed for a fossil wood species that represents the genus Larix . Fossils identified as Protopiceoxylon woods, Protopiceoxylon sp., and Protopiceoxylon yukonense represent the extinct gymnospermous Protopinaceae group. A fossil forest from the Split Lake Lagerstätte focusing on the habitus of in situ trunks and stumps was reconstructed. The vegetation encompasses a succession with three stages, an Equisetum reed facies, a Metasequoia swamp forest facies, and a Larix swamp forest facies. The taxonomic investigation suggests a widely distributed zone of vegetation with various conifers in the high latitudes. The lignite samples are characterized by predominantly woody (xylite) tissues with well-preserved, mummified stems and roots and a variable content of liptinite macerals, mostly resinite and suberinite. The intensive yellow fluorescent textinite of characteristic zoned structures and distinct microspores was observed in all investigated lignites.
