RECENT OUTER-SHELF FORAMINIFERAL ASSEMBLAGES ON THE CARNARVON RAMP AND NORTHWESTERN SHELF OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA Available to Purchase
Abstract: The carbonate sediments of the Western Australian shelf in the Indian Ocean host diverse assemblages of benthic foraminifera. These shelf environments are dominated by the southward-flowing Leeuwin Current, which impacts near-surface circulation and influences biogeographic ranges of Indo-Pacific warm-water foraminifera. Analyses of outer-ramp to upper-slope sediments (127–264 m water depth) at four different sites (some with replicates) revealed 185 benthic species. A shift from benthic to planktonic foraminifera was accompanied by a decrease in “larger” benthic foraminifera below the lowermost euphotic zone. Fisher α and proportions of buliminid and textulariid taxa increased with water depth, as miliolids and rotaliids decreased in proportion. Cluster analyses on the 125 to 250 μm and 250 to 850 μm size fractions revealed distinct assemblages, with the former distinguishing between deeper and shallower sites, and the latter distinguishing between the Carnarvon Ramp site and the three sites on the northwestern shelf (NWS). The assemblage shift with depth was likely caused by rapidly changing physical conditions in the upper thermocline. The assemblage differences between the NWS and the Carnarvon Ramp site indicate limited horizontal transport and migration rates on the outer shelf below the influence of the Leeuwin Current. Similarity in bottom-water temperature at the studied sites indicates that water mass characteristics, biogeographic history, and/or possibly diversity in benthic shelf habitats, rather than temperature and depth, are responsible for differences between the two regions.
Carbon and hydrogen isotopic compositions of n -alkanes as a tool in petroleum exploration Open Access
Abstract: Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of individual organic compounds is a powerful but underutilized tool in petroleum exploration. When integrated with other organic geochemical methodologies it can provide evidence of fluid histories including source, maturity, charge history and reservoir processes that can support field development planning and exploration efforts. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of the methodologies used for generating carbon and hydrogen isotope data for mid- and high-molecular-weight n -alkanes. We discuss the factors that control stable carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions of n -alkanes and related compounds in sedimentary and petroleum systems and review current and future applications of this methodology for petroleum exploration. We discuss basin-specific case studies that demonstrate the usefulness of CSIA either when addressing particular aspects of petroleum exploration (e.g. charge evaluation, source rock–oil correlation, and investigation of maturity and in-reservoir processes) or when this technique is used to corroborate interpretations from integrated petroleum systems analysis, providing unique insights which may not be revealed when using other methods. CSIA of n -alkanes and related n -alkyl structures can provide independent data to strengthen petroleum systems concepts from generation and expulsion of fluids from source rock, to charge history, connectivity, and in-reservoir processes.

Early Cambrian metamorphic zircon in the northern Pinjarra Orogen: Implications for the structure of the West Australian Craton margin Open Access
Abstract The purpose of this Seals Atlas is to present the microstructural, petrophysical, and geomechanical properties of selected examples of cap rocks and fault seals for use as analogs in the prediction of seal capacity or containment potential. Similar atlases exist; however, this is the first such atlas to focus specifically on the characteristics of cap rocks. The atlas is primarily based on extensive mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP) analyses, but also includes thin section, XRD, grainsize distribution, SEM/EDS, and 'V shale' data. The samples included in this atlas are a result of APCRC and CO2CRC (Cooperative Research Centres) research programs focusing on top and intraformational seals and some fault seals (cataclasites) throughout Australia and New Zealand. The hydrocarbon/carbon dioxide seal examples are grouped by basin localities and further distinguished by formation, well, then depth. Where multiple examples are available, a range of lithologies and MICP data are included in the sample selection. This atlas also can be used in an evaluation of integrated seal potential for prospect risking and reservoir management.
