Plumbing the depths of magma crystallization using 176 Lu/ 177 Hf in zircon as a pressure proxy
Formation of authigenic carbonates contributed by sulfate- and metal-driven anaerobic oxidation of methane in the northern Okinawa Trough, East China Sea
ABSTRACT Southeastern New England is largely composed of Ediacaran granitoid and related volcanic rocks formed during the main phase of arc-related magmatism recorded in West Avalonian lithotectonic assemblages extending through Atlantic Canada to eastern Newfoundland. In situ Lu-Hf analyses presented here for zircons from the Dedham, Milford, and Esmond Granites and from the Lynn-Mattapan volcanic complex show a restricted range of εHf values (+2 to +5) and associated Hf- T DM model ages of 1.3–0.9 Ga, assuming felsic crustal sources. The most evolved granites within this suite lie in a belt north and west of the Boston Basin, whereas upfaulted granites on the south, as well as the slightly younger volcanic units, show more juvenile Hf isotopic compositions. Similar inferences have been drawn from previously published Sm-Nd isotopic signatures for several of the same plutons. Collectively, the isotopic compositions and high-precision U-Pb geochronological constraints now available for southeastern New England differ in important respects from patterns in the Mira terrane of Cape Breton Island or the Newfoundland Avalon zone, but they closely resemble those documented in the Cobequid and Antigonish Highlands of mainland Nova Scotia and New Brunswick’s Caledonia terrane. Particularly significant features are similarities between the younger than 912 Ma Westboro Formation in New England and the younger than 945 Ma Gamble Brook Formation in the Cobequid Highlands, both of which yield detrital zircon age spectra consistent with sources on the Timanide margin of Baltica. This relationship provides the starting point for a recent model in which episodic West Avalonian arc magmatism began along the Tonian margin of Baltica and terminated during diachronous late Ediacaran arc-arc collision with the Ganderian margin of Gondwana.

Pliocene–Pleistocene palaeoclimate reconstruction from Ashalim Cave speleothems, Negev Desert, Israel
Abstract Speleothems from Ashalim Cave, located in the arid central Negev Desert, Israel, were used in a reconstruction of the palaeoclimate of the northern Saharan–Arabian desert margin. The sequence of speleothems is composed of three stratigraphic members: the yellow Pliocene Basal Member, the brown Early Pleistocene Intermediate Member and the thin Middle–Late Pleistocene Young Member. The age of the Basal Member is c. 3.1 Ma and the base of the Intermediate Member is 1.272 ± 0.018 Ma. Two last deposition periods of the Young Member occurred at 221–190 ka (Negev Humid Period (NHP) 2) and 134–114 ka (NHP-1), associated with interglacial marine isotopic stages 7.3–7.1 and 5.5, respectively. NHP-1 and -2 occurred when the African monsoon index was highest in the last 221 ka. The δ 18 O values of the speleothems range between −6.9 and −11.2‰, 2–4‰ less than in the speleothems of central and northern Israel. This may indicate a remote southern tropical source of precipitation, although during NHP-1 and -2 the thickness of the Negev Desert speleothems decreases from north to south, showing a stronger northern Mediterranean source of moisture. The δ 13 C values of the speleothems (3.5 to −8.5‰) show steppe to semi-desert C4 type vegetation. The 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios of the speleothems increased from c. 0.7078 in the Pliocene to 0.7082–0.7085 in the Pleistocene, indicating an increasing supply of desert dust and a decrease in host rock weathering.

Iskenderun Bay is a major shallow embayment in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, where the African and Anatolian Plates converge. This tectonically active basin was investigated for oceanographic, sedimentological, geochemical, and foraminiferal parameters. On the basis of the data acquired, the distribution of living and fossil foraminifera in 284 grab and 54 gravity core samples was determined, the basin floor bathymetry of the bay constructed, radiocarbon ages of sediments and fossils ascertained, and depositional environments reconstructed. It has been discovered that for the last 13.5 k.y., water masses were stratified and sedimentation was discontinuous within the basin, which is characterized by irregular sea bottom morphology. The sedimentation rate was very slow, varying in time and space from 0 to 0.012 cm yr −1 . The foraminiferal distributions were spatially varied and discontinuous and indicate a reversal from deep to shallow marine conditions in the cores. These irregularities were attributed to active tectonics in the bay and a major tectonic uplift of the bay since the late Pleistocene.
