Abstract The study of meandering patterns created by geophysical flows is important for a number of fundamental and applied research topics, including stream and wetland restoration, land management, infrastructure design, oil exploration and production, carbon sequestration, flood-hazard mitigation and planetary palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. This volume, Meandering Streamflows: Patterns and Processes across Landscapes and Scales , contains 13 papers that present field, laboratory and numerical investigations of meandering channels found in distinct environmental and geological contexts and focus on how the interactions of different autogenic and allogenic processes, both in the horizontal and the vertical dimension, affect meander kinematics and the resulting morphology, sedimentology and stratigraphic architecture. In this introductory chapter, we offer an overview of the evolution of scientific research on meandering streams over time, aiming to review and discuss meandering patterns in both fluvial and non-fluvial settings. Additionally, we present a new compilation of data on meander morphological features, drawn from both existing literature and novel sources, encompassing over 8000 meander bends discovered across a diverse array of environments.
Reconstructing sediment distribution in meandering river deposits through a simplified numerical modelling approach, with applications to the Holocene deposits of the Venetian Plain (Italy) Available to Purchase
Abstract Many present-day alluvial floodplains display traces of abandoned meandering channel belts developed during the past millennia (i.e. mid to late Holocene). Deposits of these ancient rivers represent preferential pathways for groundwater flows and related environmental issues, such as contaminant propagation or saltwater intrusion in coastal areas. However, since formative bankfull flows in such old and abandoned routes are hard to estimate, fossil meanders have not been commonly addressed by morphodynamic numerical models, and most of them have been investigated following classical sedimentological approaches based mainly on punctual data derived from sedimentary cores. This study aims at investigating the sediment distribution within different fossil bends on the southern Venetian Plain (NE Italy), and relating such distribution to numerically modelled bed shear stresses used herein as a proxy of sediment sorting patterns. For this purpose, formative flows in the studied palaeomeanders are first inferred from measured sediment grain size and estimates of bend widths. Then, shear stress distributions are computed along the studied palaeobends using a 2D linearized model. Model results are finally compared with conductivity distributions gauged directly in the field through electromagnetic induction investigations in the frequency domain. Our results suggest significant correlations between shear stress distributions and sediment sorting estimated from conductivity data. We deem that the integration between sedimentological reconstructions and state-of-the-art numerical modelling can provide a solid contribution to predicting the spatial distribution of sediment properties within ancient meandering channel belts, with relevant implications for the understanding of shallow aquifer dynamics and soil management.
Variscan zircons everywhere? Multi-stage sedimentary recycling in Central Europe Available to Purchase
Abstract The North German Basin is part of a Central European-wide sedimentary recycling system that has existed since at least the Neoproterozoic. Understanding the evolution of such a system is crucial for further studies, as the North German Basin inherits vast natural gas resources and may act as an intermediate sink for younger strata. This study presents new detrital zircon morphology, trace element and U–Pb age data obtained from Upper Rotliegend II strata (Upper Permian). Detrital zircon dating revealed Cambrian, Carboniferous and Permian main age clusters. There are also several minor Paleo-, Meso- and Neoproterozoic age clusters. Zircon grain morphologies show completely unrounded to completely rounded grains throughout each age range. The heterogeneity of the data is key to deciphering the sedimentary history of the Central German Basin, as the basin fill is most likely a mixture of (repeatedly) recycled material and also directly derived from bedrock sources. These results are supported by trace element data, which show a wide range of values indicating different magma sources. This study further explores the dispersal patterns of detrital zircon over time and demonstrates their complexity.

Abstract The stratigraphic architecture and relationships to the expression of deep-water architectural elements geomorphology are explored for Cenozoic deposits in the Exmouth Plateau Sub-basin in Northern Carnarvon Basin. We used a high-quality 3D seismic survey and an integrated seismic attribute analysis to provide a guide for seismic interpretation of the mixed carbonate–siliciclastic depositional systems focused on four aspects: morphology, lithology, strata thickness and reflector distortion. Three depositional elements are classified into several categories: mass transport deposits (MTDs), channel systems (channel–levee and braided-like) and lobes, whose deposition is closely related to eustatic changes, and can be explained in a sequence stratigraphic framework. The falling stage system tract is characterized by the initial development of MTDs deposited on the basin floor and small erosive channels on the upper slope. Lobes are deposited in lowstand system tracts while highstand system tracts are characterized by the deposition of MTDs and progradational segments. This mixed carbonate–siliciclastic example proved to be sensitive to other variables such as climate (Middle Miocene Climate Optimum) and plate tectonics (northward Australian Plate drift), which affect geomorphological aspects such as the dimensions and preservation of internal characteristics.

Vegetational change during the Middle–Late Pennsylvanian transition in western Pangaea Available to Purchase
Abstract We present the first analysis of vegetational change in far western equatorial Pangaea (New Mexico, USA) during the Middle–Late Pennsylvanian transition (determined by conodonts and fusulinids) of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. The study is based on the largest database assembled from this region: 28 of 44 quantitatively analysed floras from 14 of 26 stratigraphic levels. Most sampled floras are ‘mixed’, both below and above the boundary, including both hygromorphic and mesomorphic/xeromorphic taxa. The taxonomic data were recalibrated morphometrically focusing on foliar traits of lamina width and venation. All data were examined using stratigraphic credible intervals, capture–mark–recapture analyses, and resampling analyses. Results indicate no substantive taxonomic turnover across the boundary. This stands in marked contrast to patterns in mid-Pangaean coal basins where there is a large wetland vegetational turnover. However, plant and physical geological data indicate that immediately following the boundary in New Mexico, and for approximately half of the Missourian Stage, floras previously dominated by hygromorphs become overwhelmingly dominated by mesomorphic/xeromorphic taxa. Although expressed differently, the western Pangaean physical and palaeobotanical patterns parallel those from mid-Pangaean coal basins and suggest a widespread environmental change.
Morphometric Analysis and Prioritization of Watershed for Water Management using Weighted Sum Approach and Geospatial Tools: A Case Study of Harohar Sub-basin, India Available to Purchase
Volcaniclastic deposits and sedimentation processes around volcanic ocean islands: the central Azores Available to Purchase
Abstract Geological histories of volcanic ocean islands can be revealed by the sediments shed by them. Hence there is an interest in studying cores of volcaniclastic sediments that are particularly preserved in the many flat-floored basins lying close to the Azores islands. We analyse four gravity cores collected around the central group of the islands. Three sedimentary facies (F1-F2a, F2b) are recognized based on visual core logging, particle morphometric and geochemical analyses. F1 is clay-rich hemipelagite comprising homogeneous mud with mottled structures from bioturbation. F2a and F2b are both clay-poor volcaniclastic deposits, which are carbonate-rich and carbonate-poor, respectively. More biogenic carbonate in F2a reflects the incorporation of unconsolidated calcareous material from island shelves or bioturbation. Within F2a and F2b we identify deposits emplaced by pyroclastic fallout, primary or secondary turbidity currents by combining multiple information from lithological composition, sedimentary structures, chemical composition of volcanic glass shards and morphometric characteristics of volcanic particles. Primary volcaniclastic sediments were found in all four cores, echoing activity known to have occurred up to historical times on the adjacent islands. These preliminary results suggest that greater details of geological events could be inferred for other volcanic islands by adopting a similar approach to core analysis.

Abstract The formal beginning of geoarchaeology in India can be traced back to 1863 when the first palaeolith was documented and collected by Robert Bruce Foote in Tamil Nadu and later described in a detailed geological context. Today, various geological tools such as geospatial analytical tools are available to provide extra mileage to geoarchaeological investigations. They supplement field evidence and enable researchers to display, manipulate, and model geological data and the associated archaeological evidence. The present paper attempts to summarize the current status of understanding of the Quaternary geoarchaeology of the Tapi River basin in west-central India. The aspects considered include geomorphology, landform evolution, morphometric parameters, relationships between climate and basin evolution and Palaeolithic and Mesolithic evidence. This present study uses Landsat imagery, locational data, Survey of India topographic sheets and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data in ArcGIS software. The study is the first comprehensive attempt to summarize the issue of prehistoric human adaptations (dominated mainly by Late Pleistocene evidence) through changing environments, with an assumption that the two occurred in synchronization. Another assumption is that the reported lithic and fossil sites and the surrounding areas have preserved signatures of original landforms and sedimentary contexts. Through these perspectives and visual integration of topography, drainage networks and Landsat image parameters in a Geographic Information System platform, along with other variable field inputs, a testable hypothetical model of the Quaternary evolution of Central Tapi valley is proposed. Additionally, an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) date of 47 145 cal BP for a newly discovered ostrich eggshell fragment from Sakegaon near Bhusawal is presented and its palaeoanthropological implications are discussed. Altogether, our observations from the study area, such as an expansion of land use from the Acheulean onwards, signatures of arid phases and the oldest reported ostrich eggshell, warrant further detailed multidisciplinary research. An in-depth understanding of the first-to-last occurrences of ostriches in the region and comprehensive picture of their pan-South Asian distribution in general will help address the issue of prehistoric human adaptations through changing environments.
