Abstract A strong and potentially dangerous decreasing trend in the level of water in Vrana Lake over the last three decades was analysed. This freshwater lake is a unique karst hydrology feature located on the small Adriatic island of Cres (405.71 km 2 ), which is entirely composed of carbonate rocks. The lake is situated in a large cryptodepression and its base reaches a depth of 61.3 m below mean sea-level. The lake is a complex hydrological–hydrogeological system with an average water volume of c. 220 × 10 6 m 3 . The larger geographical region has been affected by an increase in air temperature over the last c. 40 years. This exceptionally clean freshwater lake is the only source of potable water for the whole Cres archipelago. A dangerous drop in the water level of the lake started in 1983. This decreasing trend is driven by both global climate change and anthropogenic (the overexploitation of water) factors.

Abstract Wintershall Noordzee BV recently discovered and appraised two Chalk oil fields (Rembrandt and Vermeer) in the Dutch North Sea with wells F17-10, F17-11, F17-12 and F17-13x. Extensive core material is available, and biostratigraphical analysis plus sedimentological evaluation results are presented here. Integration of these data with detailed 3D seismic interpretation results in interesting conclusions on the tectonic inversion of the Dutch Central Graben. It can be determined that the main inversion event is the Sub-Hercynian Phase, after which an island was formed in the Chalk sea during the Campanian and Maastrichtian. Around this island, erosion products can be found in the Chalk intervals. These sediments are time and facies comparable to the Vaals Formation in the south of The Netherlands, adjacent to the inverted Roer Valley Graben. Maastrichtian sediments are seen to onlap onto the island, decreasing it in size and influence as a sediment source. It is proposed that the Laramide inversion phase in the Dutch Central Graben is a period of non-deposition and, possibly, this is also the case for most of the other Dutch inverted basins.

The western Pacific region contains 22 independent island countries and territories spread over an area of 27.8 million km 2 . Pacific peoples have lived here for as long as 50,000 yr, developing isolated cultures with close relationships to the environment. Although food security is adequate, the region suffers from persistent poverty that places many in a precarious position. Beginning in the 1920s, geological surveys conducted pioneering studies geared toward development. Beginning in the mid-1990s, many aid donors shifted their focus away from science, leading to a depletion of geo-science capacity. Lately, regional organizations have made considerable headway in expanding scientific capacity. The Geoscience Division of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community plays a significant role in helping the region attract geoscience-related aid funding and stitching the dispersed geoscience communities together. Universities in the region, assisted by geoscientists abroad and private employers, are also playing a role. This paper describes three examples of how geoscience can contribute to inclusive sustainable development. One example explores deep-sea minerals as a new source of wealth generation and the challenges the region faces in developing capacity and addressing the environmental concerns of this new revenue stream. A second project in Kiribati has moved aggregate extraction from beaches only 3 m above sea level to sediment-rich lagoons, providing new options for the future. Lastly, the promises and benefits of sustainable geothermal and ocean thermal technology are described.
