How we look and what we see: Twenty years of women in GSA Today
ABSTRACT In the 1960s and 1970s, Dr. Erving Goffman conducted gender studies on images and roles in advertising that established a framework for analyzing gender displays in print publications. Current efforts to increase diversity in professions advocate for media outreach to represent diverse populations so the groups they want to attract can imagine themselves fitting in. GSA Today , whether deliberately or not, is doing just that. This paper adapts Goffman’s “gender advertisements” methodology to analyze the portrayal of women in volumes 5 through 25 of GSA Today , the last full twenty years of monthly publications on news and information for the Geological Society of America. Two forms of gender identity are explored: photographs containing people and authors of content articles. While the number of women GSA members increased over the past 20 years, the representation of women in the Society’s publication also increased. In January 1995, women comprised 22% of people pictured in GSA Today and 17% of named authors providing written content. By December 2015, women accounted for 56% of individuals in photos and 36% of content authors. Trends demonstrate periods of rapid increase in representation and plateaus. Shifts in percentages did not correlate directly with changes in Society leadership or GSA Today editorial staff. Thanks to the ease of access to archived publications, future work can provide further insights assessing efforts to inspire career choices in geology and to encourage women to feel valued and welcomed in this profession.
Abstract This guidebook provides detailed itineraries of three of the geological field trips related to the 2017 joint meeting of the GSA Northeastern and North-Central Sections in Pittsburgh. The first chapter outlines a walking trip of downtown Pittsburgh and the escarpment to its south, consisting of seven “Pitt stops” investigating geological, archaeological, and historical aspects of the Gateway to the West. Venturing further afield, the second chapter describes a trip that explores periglacial features as far as the Upper Youghiogheny River basin in Maryland and the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania. The third chapter investigates hydrologic aspects of the 1889 Johnstown, Pennsylvania, flood, largely following the progress of the flood from its point of origin to the city of Johnstown.
Geoscience has a long history of providing guidance and support for public policy that benefits government, society, and the health of the planet. An overview of government organizations and public laws that involve geoscience for the benefit of humankind is provided here in celebration of the Geological Society of America's 125th anniversary. With an expanding human population, increasing industrialization, and evolving weaponry and hostilities, it is essential for public policy to consider geoscience guidance related to natural resource exploration and development, hazard monitoring and mitigation, national security, space exploration and development, and human impacts to Earth's land, water, air, and life.
The Geological Society of America Geologic Time Scale
Abstract The Rocky Mountain Region has been the subject of continuous, exhaustive scientific work since the first organized geologic trips to the area began in the 1860s. Despite almost 150 years of scrutiny, the region's magnificent geology continues to challenge, perplex, and astound modern geoscientists. It is a testing ground for geologists and for big geologic ideas. This volume, prepared for the 2013 GSA Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado, serves both as a progress report on what we have learned over those years of study and a guide to forthcoming scientific questions about the region. The guide's fourteen chapters, which span the region's 1.7-billion-year history, give a retrospective glimpse of early geologic ideas being forged, bring the latest mapping and analytical results from classic locations, and introduce techniques that will form the bedrock of our geologic understanding in the years to come.
