Tectonosedimentary Relations of Pennsylvanian to Jurassic Strata on the Colorado Plateau
ABSTRACT The Colorado Plateau in the southwestern United States is within the Paleozoic transcontinental arch, an area of thin, cratonic strata. The plateau was broken by latest Mississippian to early Permian Ancestral Rocky Mountain orogenesis, which produced bedrock uplifts that influenced lower Mesozoic sedimentation before Jurassic burial. Clastic sediments shed from uplifts interfinger with eolian Permian strata ultimately derived from eastern Laurentia. Triassic and Jurassic strata of the Colorado Plateau are here divided into five depositional systems, each representing a different sedimentary and tectonic setting and forming stratal associations referred to as “deposystems.” The five deposystems, which largely but not entirely correspond to formation or group names, were deposited during northward continental drift from tropical latitudes (fluvial, tidal, and nearshore marine Moenkopi and fluvial Chinle) through desert latitudes (the erg-dominated Glen Canyon and San Rafael) to temperate latitudes (fluvial Morrison). Paleomagnetically determined paleolatitudes, corrected for inclination shallowing due to postdepositional sediment compaction, place the Glen Canyon and San Rafael eolianites firmly within expected latitudes for desert environmental conditions. Lower Triassic strata of the Moenkopi deposystem form a westward-thickening wedge of fluvial and shallow marine strata and are overlain by entirely fluvial strata of the Chinle deposystem. Both contain 240–280 Ma detrital zircon populations derived from the east Mexico magmatic arc, but more northern Chinle fluvial deposits contain a higher fraction of zircons derived from Paleozoic, Neoproterozoic, and Grenville provinces in eastern Laurentia. Westward thickening of Moenkopi strata is attributed to subsidence in the proforeland basin of the east-vergent Sonoma orogeny in central Nevada, whereas accommodation space for Chinle sedimentation was provided by dynamic subsidence above the upper Triassic subduction zone behind the newly established Cordilleran magmatic arc to the southwest. Overlying, largely Jurassic Glen Canyon and San Rafael deposystems are dominantly eolian. Detrital-zircon geochronologic analysis indicates that eolian sands were derived largely from eastern Laurentia. Interbedded marginal marine, lacustrine-sabkha, and fluvial strata have been associated with regional unconformities, but evidence for such unconformities is here regarded as indicating facies transgressions without development of plateau-wide unconformities or disconformities. Upper Jurassic northward continental drift carried the plateau out of the desert belt and into the zone of prevailing westerly winds. This coincided with a flare up of magmatism in the Cordilleran magmatic arc, leading to transgression of Morrison fluvial sediments over erg deposits of the San Rafael deposystem. Eastward dispersal of Morrison sediments marked the initiation of the Cordilleran orogen as the dominant topographic feature of the plateau region.
Abstract The Gebra–Magia Complex is an important example of a submarine mass-movement composite located on the lower continental slope of the Antarctic Peninsula (Central Bransfield Basin). Continuous instability dynamics over time is inferred to have affected the palaeo-trough-mouth fans present in the study area. The depositional architecture and the outstanding relief of the Gebra Valley, which is the most striking morphological feature in the area, determine the asymmetrical morphology of the complex. This complex is characterized, from east to west, by an open-slope margin flanking the sidewall of the Gebra Valley, the Gebra Valley itself and a SW margin that is connected to the Magia area by a large scar approximately 7.8 km to the SW. The Gebra Valley is a Quaternary debris valley resulting from repeated large-scale mass-transport and cut-and-fill processes. In contrast, the Magia area is dominated by unchannelized sedimentary instability processes, resulting in a different sedimentary architecture and morphology. The near-surface sediments in the Gebra–Magia Complex document the continuous occurrence of recent mass movements, as also evidenced by flows transported downslope as unchannelized or channelized flows. Climate and tectonic activity are considered the primary factors controlling the development of the complex.
Source potential and depositional environment of Oligocene and Miocene rocks offshore Bulgaria
Abstract Oligo-Miocene (‘Maikopian’) deposits are considered the main source rocks in the Black Sea area, although only a few source-rock data are available. Geochemical logs from nine wells are used together with age constraints provided by calcareous nannoplankton, well and seismic data to determine vertical and lateral changes of the source potential. Oligocene rocks overlie Eocene deposits with a major unconformity on the western Black Sea shelf in Bulgaria. A west–east-trending erosional structure (the Kaliakra canyon) developed during Lower Oligocene time and was filled with Oligo-Miocene deposits. Potential source rocks are present in different stratigraphic units, but the most prolific intervals accumulated during time intervals when the isolation of the Paratethys resulted in oxygen-depleted, brackish environments with high bioproductivity. These include Lower Solenovian rocks related to blooms of calcareous nannoplankton, which form an extensive layer outside the Kaliakra canyon. This unit hosts a good potential to generate oil and gas. Diatom-rich, very good oil-prone source rocks accumulated during a second isolation event in the Kozakhurian. Thick sections of these diatom-rich rocks occur within the canyon and are present in thin layers outside of it. High productivity of siliceous organisms is attributed to upwelling within the canyon. All studied units are thermally immature on the shelf.
Abstract In glacier-fed Baspa River valley, Late Quaternary climatic changes are archived in the terraces, fan and landslide deposits. An initial optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) based stratigraphy of these deposits is developed to deduce geomorphic evolution and palaeoclimatic changes. The data show large alluvial fan progradation around Sangla till c. 45 ka (middle of marine isotope stage 3 or MIS-3) due to glacial retreat and readjustment of glacigenic sediment under warm and humid conditions followed by incision. During the end phase of MIS-3 (>23 ka), intensified precipitation blocked the river course near Sangla and Kharogla by rock avalanches and imposed lacustrine conditions which recorded sedimentation until the beginning of Holocene ( c. 11.4 ka). Reduced sedimentation in these lakes during the last glacial maximum (LGM) c. 23–18 ka suggests a cold and arid climate, whereas increased sedimentation during c. 18–11.5 ka indicates a warm and humid climate post-LGM. A palaeolake breach occurred during early Holocene and incision continued throughout the Holocene, with a pulse of fluvial aggradation during c. 9.1–6.5 ka over lacustrine remnant. In the upper reach of the valley (Chitkul area), coeval aggradation continued from >28 ka until c. 19 ka (MIS-3 to LGM) under cold and relatively arid conditions. This study emphasizes that Late Quaternary geomorphic evolution of Baspa valley is well synchronous with glacial fluctuations and the rapid response of the glacifluvial system to Indian summer monsoon (ISM) dynamics.
