..., a mineral outside of this system. No success has been obtained in attempting to write a formula showing a simple coupling arrangement involving Ca-X and Na-Y. Thus the varulites are high in Na and low in Fe‴. Nevertheless it seems clear that these minerals are all members of one monoclinic isotypous series...

Photograph of the large, fragmented ellipsoidal nodule, which consists of an outer and intermediate zone dominated by liraite (Lrt). The core is almost entirely replaced by alluaudite group minerals (Alldt; varulite and alluaudite). The light greenish-gray incrustations on the right side of the nodule are lichens.

(a) Photomicrograph of a polished thin section observed under a polarizing microscope. Green to yellowish brown subhedral crystals are liraite (Lrt) associated with a void filled with robertsite (Rbst) and partially replaced by alluaudite group minerals (Alldt; varulite and alluaudite). Late micro-veinlets of quartz (Qtz) crosscut the whole mineral assemblage. (b) Image of an irregular fragment of liraite, obtained with a binocular digital microscope.

Lindberg's work was valuable in helping to clear up some confusion, but a new mineral name should not have been suggested on the basis of such scanty data. Nevertheless, the name was enshrined in Danas...

Mössbauer spectra and Fe coordination polyhedra created using CrystalMaker software and data from the American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database, with citations to the crystal structure refinements from which the polyhedra were built following each mineral species name. Dashed lines representing Fe2+ in doublets with Δ = 1.43–1.99 mm/s are shown in green, Δ = 2.00–2.85 mm/s are light blue, Δ > 2.85 mm/s are dark blue. Solid lines represent Fe3+ with Δ = 0.23–0.49 mm/s in red, 0.5–0.79 mm/s in orange, and Δ > 0.80–1.55 mm/s are purple. The fit envelope for each fit is shown as a thin solid line in gold. Alluaudite (Moore 1971a) ML-P40 and “ferroalluaudite” ML-P14 (Corbin et al. 1986) are predominantly Fe3+ in the M2 site. Two samples of hagendorfite, DD184 and DD237 (Redhammer et al. 2005), and varulite DD321 contain multiple doublets of Fe2+ and Fe3+, but as with the other alluaudite group minerals, all Fe is assigned to the M2 site. There is no crystal structure refinement available for varulite, so the M2 polyhedron from Hagendorfite is illustrated there hypothetically. Arrojadite ML-P25 (Yakubovich et al. 1986) contains multiple Fe2+ doublets but their assignments to specific sites are unclear. Childrenite (Giuseppetti and Tadini 1984) ML-P29 has only one doublet corresponding to the Fe (M) site. In arsenocrandallite DD150 (Blount 1974), Fe3+ is substituting into the Al site, likely in polyhedra with two different combinations of next nearest neighbors. (Color online.)
