... on the KwaZulu-Natal coast are not well understood. In particular the development and role of spits and bars in the functioning of small, perched estuaries needs clarification. The purpose of this study was to determine the mechanism of spit initiation and growth in the Mdloti estuary, a small perched estuary...

On a recent visit to Kent Lake in southeastern Michigan ( Fig. 1 ), the writer noticed several small bars and spits that had formed during the previous few days. This paper is a study of these small, lake...

Alluviation commonly overcomes disposal in inner segments entered by rivers, filling them while leaving outer segments in equilibrium. Depths in tidal...

Schematic sequence depicting idealised spit formation at the Mdloti River Estuary. (a) Catastrophic flooding completely erodes the berm and results in the formation of an ephemeral stream mouth bar, and in some cases, a small flood delta. (b) The northern spit grows through elongation by the southward flowing longshore drift current. The ephemeral stream mouth bar is reworked landwards. (c) The ephemeral stream mouth bar is reworked such that it is incorporated by the northward elongating spit bar and the estuary mouth is closed. (d) The spit bar grows both laterally and vertically. Lateral growth results in arcuate wash over fans, created by overtopping waves. In addition to large waves, vertical accretion is aided by wind. (e) The estuary bar is intermittently breached, either through flooding or human interference. If discharge is not of catastrophic flood levels, sediments transported along the longshore drift current are deposited in the barrier inlet, causing its migration southwards.

Along the shallower coasts these have completely changed...
