...Mary G. Macquistan; Lee A. Groat Abstract Ronpetersonite, BaWO 4 , is a new mineral from the Gun occurrence in the Yukon, Canada, where it is found in aggregates up to 500 µm in diameter in a groundmass comprised of witherite, cerchiaraite-(Al), and edingtonite. Grains of ronpetersonite are heavily...

(A–I) Photomicrographs and BSE images of ronpetersonite. Left column (A, D, G): Plane polarized light (PPL). Middle column (B, E, H): Crossed nicols. Right column (C, F, I): Backscatter electron images showing ronpetersonite (white, outlined by orange dashed lines in the corresponding PPL image) surrounded by witherite (light gray) and containing inclusions of witherite and cerchiaraite-(Al) (medium gray). Embayment of diopside in ronpetersonite is also noted. The brown mineral in (G) and (H) is taramellite. Note that the BSE images are at a different scale to the photomicrographs but are paired with the grain they show in PPL and XPL. (A, B, D, E) Field of view: 1.2 mm; (C, F) field of view: 0.7 mm; (I) field of view: 0.15 mm. Ccr = cerchiaraite (-Fe and -Al intermediates), Cls = celsian, Di = diopside, Edi = edingtonite, Qz = quartz, Rpt = ronpetersonite, Tmel = taramellite, Wth = witherite.

Photomicrographs from the same thin section as ronpetersonite in plane polarized light (left) and crossed nicols (right) showing the textural relationships of cymrite, witherite, cerchiaraite, and celsian, which indicate that this unit has experienced extensive hydrothermal alteration of the primary assemblage. Ccr = cerchiaraite (-Fe and -Al intermediates), Cls = Celsian, Cym = Cymrite, Wth = Witherite.

Cation radius (2+ in 8-coordination; Haynes et al. 2013) versusa-axis length for scheelite (5.2429 Å, Ca2+), stolzite (5.4595 Å, Pb2+), and ronpetersonite (5.6192 Å, Ba2+) showing the effect of cation size on the dimensions of the eight-coordinated polyhedron via its effect on the length of the a-axis. The lengths of a for scheelite and stolzite are from Hazen et al. (1985).
