Complex landslide behaviour and structural control: a three-dimensional conceptual model of Åknes rockslide, Norway
Abstract Åknes is an active complex large rockslide of approximately 30–40 Mm 3 located within the Proterozoic gneisses of western Norway. The observed surface displacements indicate that this rockslide is divided into several blocks moving in different directions at velocities of between 3 and 10 cm year −1 . Because of regional safety issues and economic interests this rockslide has been extensively monitored since 2004. The understanding of the deformation mechanism is crucial for the implementation of a viable monitoring system. Detailed field investigations and the analysis of a digital elevation model (DEM) indicate that the movements and the block geometry are controlled by the main schistosity (S 1 ) in gneisses, folds, joints and regional faults. Such complex slope deformations use pre-existing structures, but also result in new failure surfaces and deformation zones, like preferential rupture in fold-hinge zones. Our interpretation provides a consistent conceptual three-dimensional (3D) model for the movements measured by various methods that is crucial for numerical stability modelling. In addition, this reinterpretation of the morphology confirms that in the past several rockslides occurred from the Åknes slope. They may be related to scars propagating along the vertical foliation in folds hinges. Finally, a model of the evolution of the Åknes slope is presented.

Large rockslides in the Alps: A commentary on the contribution of G. Abele (1937–1994) and a review of some recent developments
Abstract Herein I describe the status of rockslide studies in the Alps and present a brief history of the studies. Special attention is paid to the outstanding part in landslide studies in the past 25 years taken by G. Abele, and I introduce his main work to those English-speaking readers who may not be familiar with this scientist. After extensive morphological studies on many rockslide deposits in the Alps, Abele studied huge debris flows that were possibly triggered by rockslides. In addition, new aspects in rockslide studies and the latest rockslides in the Alps are described.

Geological features of landslides caused by the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake in Japan
Abstract Before dawn on 6 September 2018, a powerful earthquake with a Japan Meteorological Agency magnitude ( M j ) of 6.7 hit central Hokkaido, causing more than 6000 landslides. As human damage, 36 of the 44 fatalities from the earthquake were from earthslides in Atsuma Town. Most slope movements were shallow earthslides of mantle-bedded tephra and soil layers, but some were deep rockslides involving basement rocks such as shale and mudstone of Miocene. Although the shallow earthslides were easily distinguishable in photos from satellites or airplane, the rockslides were more difficult to identify owing to their vegetation. Based on the quick interpretation of a high-resolution (0.5 m horizontal resolution) shaded relief map made from digital elevation model data by airborne laser survey and supplemental field surveys, we effectively identified 259 rockslides (196 certain ones and 63 possible ones) in Atsuma and Mukawa towns under newly invented identification criteria based on the scarp depth and positional relation between scarp and ridge topography. It was revealed that most rockslides were distributed within 10 km from the epicentre, while earthslides were distributed until 20 km north of the epicentre, and they seemed to be controlled by the thickness of mantle-bedded tephra and the soil layer. We also identified many traces of past rockslides and earthslides. The results show the possibilities for effective measurement of slope by clarifying the landslide distribution both this earthquake and past ones using high-resolution digital elevation model data.
Abstract Granitic batholiths around the Pacific Ocean basin provide examples of landslide types that characterize progressive stages of weathering. The stages include (1) fresh rock, (2) core-stones, (3) decomposed granitoid, and (4) saprolite. Fresh granitoid is subject to rockfalls, rockslides, and block glides. They are all controlled by factors related to jointing. Smooth surfaces of sheeted fresh granite encourage debris avalanches or debris slides in the overlying material. The corestone phase is characterized by unweathered granitic blocks or boulders within decomposed rock. Hazards at this stage are rockfall avalanches and rolling rocks. Decomposed granitoid is rock that has undergone granular disintegration. Its characteristic failures are debris flows, debris avalanches, and debris slides. Saprolite is residual granitic rock that is vulnerable to rotational slides and slumps. As a granitic rock mass progressively decomposes, the critical slope angle decreases, allowing slope failures throughout its weathering history. Failures in granitic rock are more abundant during the advanced stages of decomposition. Therefore, landslides are most common in the humid tropics, where intense chemical weathering occurs. Identification of the granitoid’s weathering stage will help the engineering geologist evaluate the slope-stability hazards of an area.
